At Lygon Everyday Chemist in Brunswick East, our pharmacist team provides personalised Travel Health Consultations, vaccination-history reviews and travel vaccination advice based on:
Start with your vaccination history
One of the most important parts of preparing for overseas travel is making sure your routine vaccinations are up to date. Don't assume that because you were vaccinated as a child, everything is still current.
Our pharmacists can review your available vaccination history, including records held on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), and discuss any gaps that may need attention before you travel.
Depending on your age, history and destination, this may include checking protection against diseases such as:
Australian health authorities recommend discussing overseas travel vaccinations ideally 6–8 weeks before departure, as some vaccines require more than one dose or time to develop protection. If you're leaving sooner, however, it is still worth speaking with us — don't assume you've left it too late.

Travel vaccine recommendations can change
Travel health is not a one-size-fits-all checklist. Disease outbreaks, vaccination requirements and recommendations can change, sometimes quite quickly.
That's why our travel consultations consider current Australian and international travel-health information, as well as your individual itinerary.
For example, the international polio situation continues to change. In August 2026, the World Health Organization extended its temporary recommendations relating to the international spread of poliovirus. Australian guidance recommends that travellers are appropriately vaccinated against polio and that additional vaccination may be required for some travellers depending on the destination and their previous vaccination history.

The important question isn't simply: 'Do I need a polio vaccine?'
It is: 'Am I appropriately vaccinated for where I am going, what I will be doing and my individual circumstances?'
That's what a travel-health consultation helps us determine.
Travel vaccinations available through participating pharmacistsUnder Victoria's Community Pharmacist Program, appropriately trained participating pharmacists can provide travel-health advice and administer certain travel vaccinations, including:
Our pharmacists can also assess your routine vaccination status and discuss other vaccinations that may be appropriate before travel.
Victoria's Department of Health recommends that people travelling overseas check their vaccination history and seek personalised advice because the vaccines recommended can vary according to the destination, activities, duration of travel and individual health needs.

Where a vaccination, medicine or travel-health requirement is outside our pharmacist service, we will explain this and recommend the appropriate referral.
What happens during your Travel Health Consultation?
1. Tell us where you're going
Bring your itinerary if you have one. Different health risks can exist not only between countries, but between regions within the same country. A week in a major city may involve very different risks from trekking, rural travel, visiting family, working with animals or spending several months overseas.
2. We review your vaccination history
Where available, we can review your Australian Immunisation Register history and discuss previous vaccines that may not appear on AIR. If you have older vaccination records, travel-vaccine certificates or a vaccination booklet, please bring them with you.
3. We assess your individual travel risk
We consider:
More than travel vaccines
Mosquito and insect protection
Mosquito-borne illnesses occur in many popular travel destinations. Depending on where you're travelling, illnesses may include dengue, Japanese encephalitis, malaria and other mosquito-borne infections.
Our pharmacists can discuss practical mosquito-avoidance measures including:
Visiting friends and relatives overseas?
People returning to their country of birth or travelling to visit friends and relatives can sometimes underestimate their health risk. Longer stays, eating and drinking with local communities and greater exposure to local environments can increase the risk of some travel-related infections.
Victorian health authorities specifically recommend that people visiting friends and relatives overseas also have their vaccination status reviewed before travelling.

Even if you've travelled to the destination many times before, it's worth checking again.
Travelling with children?
Children travelling overseas should also have their routine vaccinations reviewed.
Measles is particularly important. Victoria continues to report measles associated with international travel, and overseas outbreaks can change rapidly. In some circumstances, infants travelling overseas may be recommended to receive an early measles-containing vaccine.

Speak with our pharmacist team early so we can assess your child's vaccination history and determine whether GP or specialist review is required.
When should I book?
Ideally: 6–8 weeks before travelling
This provides time for vaccination courses and appropriate planning.

Leaving sooner? Still book.
Even when departure is only weeks or days away, there may still be useful vaccinations, preventative measures and travel-health advice we can provide.
Bring these to your appointment
