As we age, getting a solid night’s sleep can become surprisingly tricky. Many seniors find themselves waking several times during the night or struggling to fall back asleep - leading to fatigue, low mood, and even poorer memory and balance.


Why Older Adults Sleep Differently

Sleep patterns naturally change with age due to:

1. Reduced melatonin production – The body’s “sleep hormone” declines, making it harder to stay asleep.

2. Medical conditions – Pain, heart disease, reflux, or urinary issues can interrupt rest.

3. Medications – Blood pressure tablets, antidepressants, and painkillers can affect sleep cycles.

4. Changes in circadian rhythm – The body’s internal clock shifts earlier, causing early waking.

5. Sleep apnoea and restless legs – Common but under-diagnosed causes of poor sleep.

7 Things To Do If You Wake In The Middle Of The Night

1. Don’t panic or check the clock

Looking at the time increases stress. Keep lights dim and stay calm.


2. Do a slow breathing reset

Try 4-7-8 breathing: inhale 4 seconds, hold 7, exhale 8. It lowers heart rate and promotes calm.


3. Keep the lights low

If you get up, use a soft amber night-light — bright light suppresses melatonin.


4. Avoid your phone or TV

Blue light tricks your brain into thinking it’s daytime. Read a paper book or listen to gentle music instead.


5. Do a “body scan” relaxation

Focus on relaxing one body part at a time — head to toe. It helps ease muscle tension.


6. Keep the bedroom cool and comfortable

Seniors often wake from temperature changes. A fan or breathable bedding can make a big difference.


7. Review your evening habits

Limit caffeine after lunch, avoid heavy dinners, and get morning sunlight exposure to reset your body clock.
