Why Vaccination Is So Important

Vaccines protect against serious diseases that still circulate in the community. Measles, meningococcal infections, and whooping cough continue to appear across Victoria, often linked to international travel.

By staying up to date with your vaccinations, you’re protecting not just yourself but everyone around you - especially children, older adults, and those with weaker immune systems.

Flu (Influenza)

The flu vaccine helps prevent serious illness each winter. It’s free for children under five, adults over 65, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions.

When: March to June is the best time to get vaccinated before flu season peaks.

COVID-19 Boosters

COVID-19 remains active in our community. Regular boosters help maintain protection against new strains and reduce the risk of hospitalisation. Vaccines are free for all adults, especially recommended for those over 65 and anyone with chronic conditions.

Whooping Cough, Tetanus and Diphtheria (dTpa)

Adults should receive a booster every 10 years. Pregnant women are advised to receive one in each pregnancy to protect their newborn baby.

Shingles 

About one in three people will experience shingles in their lifetime. The Shingles vaccine provides long-term protection and is now funded for people aged 65 and over, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults from 50 years.

Meningococcal Disease

Meningococcal infections can be severe and life-threatening. Two vaccines are available:

• Meningococcal ACWY – free for teenagers and at-risk individuals
• Meningococcal B – free for Aboriginal infants and available privately for others

Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)

Measles outbreaks still occur in Victoria, often linked to overseas travel. If you’re unsure about your vaccination history, we can check your Australian Immunisation Register and provide a simple MMR update if needed.

HPV

The HPV vaccine protects against viruses that can cause several cancers. It’s part of the school program for teenagers and available privately for adults up to age 45.

Travel Vaccines

Before you travel overseas, check if you need protection against diseases like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera, or Rabies.
