It’s estimated that 1 in 7 Australian women live with endometriosis - a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it, often causing pain, fatigue, and fertility challenges.

Although there’s no single cure, the right mix of medical care, lifestyle support, and pharmacy guidance can make a meaningful difference.

What Causes Endometriosis?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but research suggests it’s linked to:

  • Hormonal imbalance, especially excess oestrogen
  • Immune system dysfunction, leading to inflammation
  • Retrograde menstruation, where menstrual blood flows backward into the pelvis
  • Genetic factors, with higher risk if a close relative is affected

Treatment and Medical Options

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and future fertility plans. Options may include:

  • Prescription medicines:
    • Hormonal therapy , or GnRH agonists to suppress endometrial tissue growth.
    • Pain relief medicines such as naproxen or ibuprofen for cramping and pelvic pain.
  • Surgical options: remove or destroy endometrial tissue to relieve pain or improve fertility.
  • Complementary support: Heat therapy, TENS units, and gentle exercise can improve comfort and blood flow.

Over-the-Counter (OTC) and Pharmacy Support

Your pharmacist can help with:

  • Non-prescription anti-inflammatory pain relief
  • Iron supplements if heavy bleeding leads to low iron
  • Magnesium to support muscle relaxation
  • Probiotics to balance gut health, often disrupted by hormonal changes or pain medication

Vitamins and Herbal Options

Certain nutrients can help reduce inflammation and support hormonal balance:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (Bioceuticals UltraClean EPA/DHA) – anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Turmeric (curcumin) – may ease pelvic inflammation (Herbs of Gold Curcumin Complex)
  • Zinc and Vitamin B6 – support hormone metabolism and energy
  • Iron - helps restore low stores after heavy bleeding
  • Herbal support such as chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) and ashwagandha may assist in regulating cycles and reducing stress

Always speak with your pharmacist or GP before starting supplements, especially if you take prescription medications.

Foods to Have and Foods to Avoid

Your diet plays a vital role in managing endometriosis symptoms:

Foods to Enjoy:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables rich in antioxidants
  • Whole grains like oats, quinoa, and brown rice
  • Fatty fish (salmon, sardines) for omega-3s
  • Nuts, seeds, and olive oil for anti-inflammatory fats

Foods to Limit or Avoid:

  • Processed meats and fried foods
  • High-sugar snacks and refined carbohydrates
  • Excess caffeine and alcohol
  • Dairy or gluten (some women report symptom improvement when reduced)
