Why good sleep may be the most underestimated form of heart care.
“Sleep that knits up the ravell’d sleave of care.”
- William Shakespeare
Sleep is not a luxury. It is not optional.
From a medical perspective, sleep is one of the most powerful and underestimated tools for protecting heart health, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, hormone balance, and long-term cardiovascular outcomes.
We've been running in-pharmacy sleep studies at Lygon Everyday Chemist since 2018. Over that time, we've seen locals walk in tired - and walk out months later healthier, lighter, clearer-headed, and in many cases with better blood pressure and cardiovascular markers.
Sleep is one of the four pillars of health:
Ignore one, and the others struggle.
'I love sleep. My life has the tendency to fall apart when I'm awake.'
- Ernest Hemingway.
Sleep Is Active Repair, Not Passive Rest
Sleep is not simply rest - it is active biological repair.
During healthy sleep:
Clinicians call this nocturnal dipping. People who lose this dip have a significantly higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
Sleep is when the pump finally gets serviced.
'Sleep is the best meditation.'
- Dalai Lama
Daylight Saving: The One-Hour Experiment No One Signed Up For
Sleep researcher Matthew Walker, author of 'Why We Sleep', describes one of the most powerful natural experiments in sleep science.
Every year, when daylight saving time begins and we lose just ONE hour of sleep:
Nothing else changes. No diet shift. No exercise drop.
Just one hour less sleep - and the heart pays the price.
If a medication caused this level of harm, it would be withdrawn immediately.
'It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.'
- John Steinbeck
Sleep, Hormones, and the 'Testicles' Lecture
Matthew Walker famously opens some lectures with:
'Today, we're going to talk about testicles.:
In hormonal terms, a sleep-deprived 40-year-old can resemble someone a decade older.
These hormonal shifts directly affect blood pressure, cholesterol metabolism, weight, and heart health.
“The nicest thing for me is sleep, then at least I can dream.”
- Marilyn Monroe
In practice, we often see people with 'hard-to-control' blood pressure whose missing piece turns out to be poor sleep or undiagnosed sleep apnoea.
'A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow.'
- Charlotte Bronte
Obstructive sleep apnoea causes repeated airway collapse during sleep, leading to:
“Laugh and the world laughs with you, snore and you sleep alone.”
- Anthony Burgess
“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
- Benjamin Franklin
Without sharing names, we can confidently say we’ve seen locals who:
“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not slept well.”
- Virginia Woolf
A sleep study doesn’t mean 'you’re getting a machine'.
It means answers.
Depending on results, support may include:
“Sleep - those little slices of death - how I loathe them.”
- Edgar Allan Poe
