473-475 Lygon Street, Brunswick East, VIC, 3057

For many people, being diagnosed with sleep apnoea is a turning point.

Some patients feel relieved they finally have an answer for:

  • constant fatigue
  • loud snoring
  • poor concentration
  • morning headaches
  • waking unrefreshed
  • struggling through the day

Others feel overwhelmed.

“Do I really need a CPAP machine?”
“Will I ever get used to it?”

“What if I can’t tolerate it?”

These are normal questions.

At  Lygon Everyday Chemist in Brunswick East, we’ve been helping local patients navigate sleep studies and CPAP therapy since 2018. And after nearly four decades working as a pharmacist supporting people through medical challenges, one thing has become very clear:

Successful CPAP therapy is about much more than simply buying a machine.

It’s about:

  • support
  • education
  • patience
  • troubleshooting
  • consistency
  • and small adjustments that can make a very big difference.

CPAP Is Still The Gold Standard Treatment for Sleep Apnoea

For many patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) remains the gold standard treatment worldwide.

Why?

Because CPAP helps keep the airway open during sleep.

This may help:

  • reduce snoring
  • improve oxygen levels
  • improve sleep quality
  • reduce daytime fatigue
  • improve concentration and energy
  • support cardiovascular health
  • improve overall quality of life

For some people, the difference can be remarkable.

One local patient told us:

“I didn’t realise how exhausted I’d become until I finally started sleeping properly again.”

Another said:

“My partner noticed the difference before I did. I had more energy, less irritability, and wasn’t falling asleep on the couch every night.”

But Here’s The Truth Most People Don’t Hear - Simply buying a CPAP machine is not always enough.

And sometimes, it may not even be the correct first step.

Some patients may also require:

  • weight management support
  • nasal congestion treatment
  • positional sleep strategies
  • review of medications affecting sleep
  • referral for a mandibular advancement device
  • further specialist review

That’s why we believe sleep apnoea treatment works best when:

  • patients
  • GPs
  • sleep physicians
  • and local support teams

all work together.

Our role at  Lygon Everyday Chemist is to support patients through the practical day-to-day challenges of CPAP therapy.

Why The First Four Weeks Matter So Much

The first few weeks of CPAP treatment are often the hardest.

This is where many people either:

  • build confidence and succeed
    or
  • become frustrated and give up too early.

That’s why we strongly believe in the value of a properly supported CPAP trial.

Little tweaks can make a big difference.

During the first four weeks, we commonly help patients with:

  • mask leaking
  • dry mouth
  • pressure concerns
  • blocked noses
  • humidity adjustments
  • claustrophobic feelings
  • mouth breathing
  • skin irritation
  • removing the mask overnight
  • learning how to relax with therapy

Sometimes the solution is simple:

  • adjusting the mask slightly
  • changing mask type
  • increasing humidity
  • practising during the day
  • improving nasal breathing
  • or simply reassuring patients that early struggles are normal.

Why Local Support Matters

Buying online can sometimes leave patients feeling isolated when issues arise.

One of the biggest advantages of working with a local pharmacy-based support team is accessibility.

Patients can:

  • drop in locally
  • ask questions face-to-face
  • troubleshoot problems early
  • receive encouragement
  • and make small adjustments before frustration builds.

Often, these small adjustments are the difference between:

  • giving up
    or
  • long-term success.

“I Think I’m Failing CPAP…”

This is something we hear surprisingly often.

The good news?

Early struggles with CPAP are extremely common.

Many patients initially tell us:

  • “The pressure feels strange.”
  • “I can’t get comfortable.”
  • “The mask leaks.”
  • “I keep taking it off.”
  • “I feel claustrophobic.”
  • “I’m still tired.”
  • “I don’t think this is going to work for me.”

Most of these challenges can improve significantly with support, troubleshooting, and persistence.

One patient nearly stopped therapy during the first week because of mask discomfort and mouth dryness. After changing mask style and adjusting humidity settings, things improved dramatically over the following weeks.

Today, they won’t sleep without it.

Why Mask Fit Is So Important

There is no “perfect CPAP mask” for everyone.

Some patients do best with:

  • nasal masks
  • nasal pillow masks
  • or full-face masks

The wrong mask can lead to:

  • leaks
  • discomfort
  • frustration
  • poor sleep
  • and treatment failure.

That’s why proper fitting and ongoing adjustments matter.

Sometimes the first mask simply isn’t the right one - and that’s okay.

Why We Talk About Nasal Breathing So Much

One of the most common issues we see is mouth breathing.

Whenever possible, nasal breathing is generally preferred during CPAP therapy because the nose naturally:

  • filters air
  • humidifies air
  • warms air
  • and may improve comfort and stability during treatment.

Mouth breathing may contribute to:

  • dry mouth
  • air leaks
  • discomfort
  • and reduced tolerance in some patients.

That’s why we often discuss:

  • nasal congestion
  • saline rinses
  • humidification
  • nasal breathing practice
  • and relaxation strategies.

Sometimes we even recommend patients practise using their machine during the day while:

  • reading
  • watching TV
  • or relaxing quietly.

This helps many people adapt to therapy gradually and confidently.

Common Mistakes People Make With CPAP

1. Expecting Instant Perfection

Adjustment takes time.

2. Giving Up Too Early

Many successful users struggled initially.

3. Using The Wrong Mask

Mask comfort is critical.

4. Ignoring Nasal Congestion

Breathing comfort matters.

5. Not Asking For Help

Most CPAP issues are fixable.

6. Using It Inconsistently

Consistency improves adaptation.

7. Trying To “Push Through” Problems Alone

Support matters.

Why Patients Choose Lygon Everyday Chemist

Patients often tell us they value:

  • local support
  • continuity of care
  • practical troubleshooting
  • face-to-face guidance
  • medication reviews
  • mask support
  • and ongoing encouragement.

As pharmacists, we can also review medications that may affect:

  • sleep quality
  • fatigue
  • sedation
  • nasal congestion
  • and overall wellbeing.

Sleep apnoea treatment should never feel like:

“Here’s a machine - good luck.”

Patients deserve support.

What We’ve Learned After Years Supporting Sleep Apnoea Patients

After helping local patients through sleep studies and CPAP support since 2018, we’ve learned something important:

CPAP success is rarely about willpower alone.

It’s usually about:

  • education
  • confidence
  • comfort
  • consistency
  • support
  • and solving problems early.

The patients who succeed are not necessarily the patients who find it easy immediately.

They’re often the patients who:

  • ask questions
  • stay engaged
  • make adjustments
  • and work through the early challenges with support around them.

Final Thoughts

Sleep apnoea is more than just snoring.

Untreated sleep apnoea may affect:

  • energy
  • concentration
  • blood pressure
  • mood
  • cardiovascular health
  • relationships
  • and quality of life.

The good news?

For many people, effective treatment can make a real difference.

At  Lygon Everyday Chemist, we’re proud to support patients across Brunswick East and Melbourne’s inner north with practical, community-based CPAP support and sleep health guidance.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with sleep apnoea - or you’re struggling with your current CPAP setup - we’re always happy to have a conversation.

Sometimes the smallest adjustment can make the biggest difference.
